The draft German budget proposes major spending increases on defense. But with the war in Ukraine still pressuring the continent’s security, the United States pulling away from the European theater, and domestic pressure from the radical right, the details of Berlin’s reorientation remain unclear.

To examine the country’s break with decades of strategic pacifism and its search for a new focus for its military power amid a shifting transatlantic and European landscape, Carnegie Europe invites you to a debate with Liana Fix, senior fellow for Europe at the Council on Foreign Relations and a historian of German foreign and security policy.

Fix will present her new book Germany Rearmed: The Return of War and the End of Illusions and discuss its findings with Judy Dempsey, nonresident senior fellow at Carnegie Europe. The discussion will be moderated by Paul Taylor, senior visiting fellow at the European Policy Centre.

Copies of the book will be available at the event. A light reception will follow.
